Topic: Compressed Air Energy Storage in Salt Caverns

Lecturer: Prof. Maurice B. Dusseault University of Waterloo

Time: 9:00-11:30 am, Dec. 9, 2016

Site: 2-203, West Main-building

Abstract: Factoring in more renewable energy yet maintaining grid stability and reliability requires more energy storage capacity at time scales of several hours to several days. Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) provides a commercially proven means of storing energy that can help achieve further decarbonisation in Canada, integration of more renewable energy, and even temporary storage of excessive base load supply that may occur in the summer months. A grid-scale CAES project would be of great interest in China where suitable conditions come together and help achieve China’s goals of energy decarbonizing and increasing renewable energy inputs. .

About the Speaker:Prof. Maurice B. Dusseault carries out research in coupled problems in geomechanics including thermal and non-thermal oil production, wellbore integrity and compressed air energy storage in salt caverns. etc. He holds over 70 international patents on several different subjects and 520 full text conference and journal articles. Maurice works with governments and industry as an advisor and professional instructor in petroleum geomechanics.
